Sample Story for Joe Bloggs from Mitchelstown

Headline:  JOE BLOGGS WINS DUBLIN CITY MARATHON 2014

Sub-Headline: Mitchelstown man sets new course record!

Story:

A record number of 14,500 people registered for this year’s race through the streets of Dublin city. Many ran for fitness, some for charity and but most just for the fun of it.

Some dreamed of being in the top 100 finishers. Only a very few, however, had a podium position in their sights. One of those select few was Mitchelstown man Joe Bloggs.

A year of tough training that often had him up before noon on weekends, and on a strict diet of Red Bull and Yorkie bars has seen Joe reach new levels of fitness. Not since he was eight years old and spent every school break chasing girls in the schoolyard, has he been in such good shape.

After winning the World Championship Three-Legged race in Cork this year and the International Egg and Spoon race in Belfast two months ago, all eyes were on Joe Bloggs to bring an end to the Kenyan dominance in Dublin.

At 9am, the runners were lined up and ready at Fitzwilliam Square. Among those on the front row, in recognition of their performance, were Ndungu (Kenya), Lilesa (Ethiopia), Kipchumba (Kenya) and Bloggs (Mitchelstown). The starting gunshot was on time and they bolted off the starting line, with the two Kenyans taking an early lead.

Bloggs quickly moved out in front on O’Connell Street but lost ground through the Phoenix Park, when he stopped in the zoo to visit Coco, the new baby elephant. He managed to make up ground through Crumlin and took the lead again down the Templeogue road.

There was no doubt who the local spectators had come out to cheer on. It was unusual to see so many women of all ages scream his name as he went past – ‘Joe, Joe, Joe,’ they yelled as he flew past. Again, Bloggs lost ground after stopping to sign autographs and T-shirts in Milltown. An enthusiastic young fan was given a jockey back all the way down Foster’s Avenue.

Some commentators began to write Bloggs off, but those commentators had not been the ones following his career, and who knew he still had what it takes. Passing the studios of RTÉ, he stopped briefly to chat with Joe Duffy about higher rents in Dublin before storming down Nutley Lane and on to Merrion Road.

The Kenyans and Ethiopians were passed on the Grand Canal as if they were out for a Sunday stroll. Only one figure turned on to College Green heading for Merrion Square, and the crowds erupted in delight to cheer home the people’s favourite Joe Bloggs as he crossed the finish line with a new course record of 2:07:14.

The people of Mitchelstown will walk taller tomorrow knowing that Joe Bloggs is one of their own.
