Headline  (with Meath as winning team): MEATH BRINGS HOME THE SAM MAGUIRE

Sub-headline: JOE BLOGGS voted Man of the Match Again!

Story (with sample Teams Meath and Dublin):

Great games, and even great players come and go, but yesterday we 80,000 ticket holders in Croke Park may have witnessed the game of our lives. With only minutes left before full time, this young MEATH team had defeat staring them in the face.

DUBLIN fans on Hill 16 had already started to celebrate. Being five points ahead should have seen them hoisting the Sam Maguire yet again, but sometimes it only takes one man to keep a dream alive. That man was present yesterday on the pitch, proudly wearing a MEATH jersey, and on that jersey was the name of BLOGGS from HOMETOWN.

MEATH knew that all their hopes lay on JOE BLOGGS’s shoulders. The opposition had kept a tight rein on him throughout the almost 70 minutes of play. It practically seemed as if the other fourteen MEATH players were left unmarked, such was the fear DUBLIN had for BLOGGS.

Maybe it was complacency on their side, but with only a few minutes left on the clock, BLOGGS was given the space he’d fought for throughout the game. But that was all he needed. A split second later, he was charging for goal, the ball dancing in the air around him. Defending players appeared as if in slow motion compared to his skill. One kick – that’s all it took, and the ball hit the back of the net as if fired from a canon.

But MEATH was still 2 points down and with literally only seconds on the clock, the celebrating would have to wait. DUBLIN, delaying the game as long as possible, seemed to have the spirit suddenly knocked out of them, such was the talent and genius shown by BLOGGS. Up went the ball, and only one man leapt into the air, the colours of his MEATH shirt almost a blur against the blue sky.

One touch, a short run, and then the kick. A sound rang out through the stands of Croke Park – a sound I’d never heard before on this hallowed field. The sound of boot against ball; the sound of precision, of single-mindedness, of victory. All 80,000 of us; men, women and children held our breath, as we watched the ball sail through the air; the DUBLIN players paralysed to do anything, such was its speed and force.

The silence was finally broken by the sound of the ball hitting the net; the goalkeeper barely aware what had happened. A moment’s calm was felt by everyone until the crowd erupted with jubilation. BLOGGS was stormed by the other MEATH players, and the final whistle was barely heard.

MEATH was going home with the Sam Maguire, and the name of JOE BLOGGS would be sung throughout every corner of this majestic county for generations to come.
